17 feels like such a big number! It feels like Meya is older than 16, but 17 feels so big! A few months ago, Meya read a book called “My Father, Maker Of The Trees” by Eric Irivuzumugabe. It is a true story of how Eric survived the Rwandan genocide, by hiding in a tree. Meya read the book as part of her school reading assignments. The book captivated her and inspired her. She was so touched by his story, his bravery and his resilience that she asked to donate her birthday money to his organization. We are all touched by her generous and beautiful heart!
5.5 years ago when we met Meya, she was a shy and timid girl. She still possesses many of those same traits, and with it has been revealed amazing qualities and generous compassion for others! We are so proud of the amazing young woman she has become. Amazing people come from amazing role models (and the Grace of God), and it has been clear since day 1 that Meyas Mother was surely a very amazing woman! She set an example for Meya that lives on every day!

Happy birthday to a very awesome granddaughter!
Joie Pirkey here! I am sending your info to Eric along with the blog site. I received your donation for the orphans and will send it over seas to Eric asap. Thank you so much for caring for Rwanda. You know a lot of people read books like Eric's and see things about Africa on tv and such but very few get out of their comfort zone and act! The Bible says to be doers of the Word not hearers only and that means action. You Meya are someone who is going to change the world, You have already begun!!!!! Keep up the action! Thank you and Happy Birthday!
